The James C. Livingston Guild of Bruton Authors

The Hennage Library Committee has resolved, with the approval of the Vestry, to honor Bruton's published authors by creating the James C. Livingston Guild of Bruton Authors.

It is the intention of the Library Committee that the Guild, established in the name of our late fellow-parishioner and distinguished scholar, Jim Livingston, will be recognized by an inscribed roll of honor that will be prominently displayed in the Hennage Library.  Each year the Guild will induct new members as they are identified within the membership of Bruton Parish Church in accordance with qualifications established by the Library Committee.

The Authors Guild will be an honor roll of Bruton authors. There will be no organizational structure that will impose any duties or responsibilities on its members.

Last spring the Library Committee asked parishioners to identify authors among us. Our Rector, Father Chris Epperson, suggested that it would be appropriate to recognize these talented parishioners and the concept of the Guild was born. To date we have assembled a list of about two dozen Bruton members who have published works.  The Library Committee has been working to develop the project for the past number of months and is now prepared to announce the formation of the Guild.

A word about Jim Livingston: He was a long-time member of Bruton Parish Church and served with great distinction as chair of the Acquisitions Committee of the Library. He is largely responsible for the scope and quality of the library's impressive collections. Jim was a distinguished professor of religion at the College of William & Mary. He authored or edited 11 books and more than 100 articles. He will be inducted posthumously as the first member of the Guild of Bruton Authors

The Library Committee believes that the Livingston Guild of Bruton Authors will be both a fitting memorial to Dr. Livingston and an appropriate recognition of the talented authors in our Bruton family.

There are two ways to nominate a Bruton parishioner for membership in the Guild. Authors are invited to self-nominate. In addition, members of the congregation who know of members and clergy - past and present - who have published books, may offer nominations for consideration by the Library Committee.

Nomination forms may be filled out and returned electronically (click here). Hard copies of the nomination form may be obtained at the Parish House Reception Desk.

Nominations for the initial class of Bruton Authors will be accepted until June 30, 2012.
