Christian Responses to Contemporary Issues
Below are descriptions of the numerous programs presented during our fall Adult Formation Series called Christian Responses to Contemporary Issues held on Thursday evenings from September 22nd through October 20th. In case you weren't able to join us for any or all of the series, you will find a link to the video on our YouTube Channel at the end of each presentation's description if it is available.
September 22
Christian Ethics in a Plural World
The Rev'd Tyler Montgomery kicks-off the series with an introduction to the world of Christian Ethics in two parts. First, an examination of what it means to proclaim the finality of Christ in a pluralistic world. Second, an introduction to Christian Ethics as a lived reality rather than a set of principles or precepts. The following questions will be addressed:  What is Christian about Christian Ethics?  How can we talk about Christian Ethics when so many people live obviously ethical lives that are not Christian? What is distinct about Christian approaches to Ethics?  He will also include an overview of the program's purposes and how the individual topics are both singular and complementary.  Click HERE to view the video of Rev'd Montgomery's presentation and send him an email at tmontgomery@brutonparish.org if you have any questions of him.

Syrian Refugee Resettlement
This evening we'll hear from Stephen Allen, Site Coordinator from the International Rescue Committee, who will talk about the larger resettlement process, in general, but will also have information that specifically pertains to Syrians. The International Rescue Committee responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future.  Click HERE for a video from San Diego, where IRC has a large resettlement operation.  Many other videos can be accessed from the International Rescue Committee's website at https://www.rescue.org/, where donations may also be made.

Same-Gender Marriage
The Rev'd Geoffrey Hoare will speak on the topic of same-gender marriage. Throughout his career Geoffrey has actively engaged in critical issues including domestic violence, AIDS, child abuse, and homelessness. He served as director of Visions, Inc., an organization devoted to combating modern racism and other relationships with inherent differentials of power, and currently serves on their Advisory Board. He is currently the Interim Rector of The Church of the Epiphany in Washington D.C.  Click HERE to view the video by the Rev'd Geoffrey Hoare.
October 20
Sex Trafficking as Slavery
Elizabeth Ameling, Executive Director of The Latisha's House Foundation, will speak on the topic of sex trafficking as slavery. The sex industry has many components and is tied to slavery all around the world. Regardless of whether entrapment is the lure of a fast buck in a strip club, the money from prostitution by force or by choice, or tied to gangs or organized crime, the sex industry objectifies women and destroys their lives.  Click HERE to view the video by Elizabeth Ameling.
