Sweet Discourse: Valarie Holmes
The Sweet Discourse series, sponsored by the Bruton Guides Ministry, will continue on Wednesday, February 21, at 3pm at the church. The program will feature a return visit by Valarie Gray-Holmes. She is associated with Colonial Williamsburg where she portrays, with great dignity, African-American women - some enslaved and some free - during various periods of our nation's history with emphasis on the colonial period. Her characters rise above being enslaved or free and exhibit determination, courage and faith, despite individual bondage and fracturing of their families, to ensure that they survive and thrive.
Those who saw her presentation at the Friends Day Luncheon last spring were deeply moved by her interpretation of African-American women in 18th century America.
Ms. Gray-Holmes is the recipient of many honors for her performances. In 2015, she received the prestigious "Women in American History" award from the Williamsburg Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Please note that this very special presentation will be held at 3pm at the church.
