Search Committee Prayer

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: look graciously upon Bruton Parish Church; incline to your will as one the hearts, minds and souls of those who shall choose a new rector so that they might understand our congregation’s needs, wants and dreams, and your purpose for our parish. Kindle consensus among us by the flame of your Holy Spirit; help us to find a leader to inspire us to walk in your way, a preacher to teach your word, a pastor to nourish the spiritual needs of your flock, and a shepherd to nurture our stewardship of your many gifts. All this we ask through your son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Search Committee Report Feb. 2010 & Parish Profile

The Bruton Parish Search Committee is in the process of writing the Parish Profile which will provide an overview of Bruton Parish Church, both for prospective Rector candidates, as well as for the members of our parish and others who may be interested in learning more about our active congregation.  The committee is incorporating information that was gathered through the Parish Survey as well as the Listening Groups, along with descriptions of the many things which make Bruton Parish such a special place.  If you are interested in learning about the empirical data from the Parish Survey, click HERE for a link to the results.  The thoughtful answers to the essay questions on the Survey are providing us with valuable information for the Profile, but it is not possible to include them in the Survey Summary due to space constraints.  Approximately 400 surveys were completed (from a parish of some 1800 souls).  Please bear in mind as you read the results that the data in the Survey Summary reflects only the thoughts of those who completed the Parish Survey.  If you have any questions, please contact a member of the Search Committee:  Isabel Burch, Chair; Bill Carr; Margaret Driscoll; Marty Easton; Barbara Gaffield; Channing Hall; Marty Jones; Russ Sheldon; Scott Spence; and Earl White.

The Search For The Next Rector of Bruton Parish Church

With the September 2008 election of our rector, The Reverend Holly Hollerith, to the position of Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, we have embarked on a transition process to call the next rector of Bruton Parish Church. We will follow these steps along the way:

Bid farewell to our rector, Holly Hollerith
Parish farewell celebration was held on November 2, 2008
Call an interim rector
The Reverend Ron Jaynes began serving as Interim Rector on January 25, 2009.
Form a search committee
The Search Committee has been called and was commissioned on May 24, 2009.
In October, 2009, Isabel Burch became the Search Committee Chairperson
Conduct a self study
The results of the Parish Survey held in October 2009 are currently being summarized.
Listening Group sessions were held with the church leadership, staff and membership in January 2010.
Publish a Parish Profile
- Conduct the search for our next rector
- Obtain vestry and bishop approval of the Search Committee recommendation
Call the new rector and reach a contract agreement
- Bid farewell to the interim rector
Welcome the new rector and begin a new ministry

We expect this entire transition process commencing with the election of our rector as bishop in September 2008 and ending with the arrival of the new rector, to take two years or more.

In the past 52 years, Bruton has had three rectors and two interim rectors. We will proceed carefully and prayerfully to select the next rector of Bruton, a rector who will lead us into the future. This interval between rectors offers us the opportunity for self-examination and discernment about our mission and ministry.  In addition, during these difficult times, as Holly stated in his farewell sermon, we must have our house in order to seek a new rector “from a position of strength”.  As we journey through this transition, we will keep you updated on our progress.
