Vacation Bible School

Taste & See, God is Good was the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School held the first week of August in our Parish House.  We learned where we can share our bounty with God's people.  We gave 89 pounds of food to the Food Bank of the Virginia Peninsula, 10 bags of peanut butter and jelly to FISH, and 10 bags of Hamburger Helper and canned goods to The Grove Christian Outreach Center.  We sang, played games, painted aprons and made our own pretzels (lots of folks asked for the recipes, click here!), which made the Parish House smell like a bakery, and enjoyed the community of our three churches:  Hickory Neck, St. Martin's and Bruton Parish.   Watch for the September issue of The Chronicle for pictures of all the fun.  Many thanks to all the volunteers, adults and youth ... you are VBS!

Children-in-the-Churchyard & Sunday School: Living the Good News

Throughout the summer, Children-in-the-Churchyard begins at 9:00 a.m. in the churchyard each Sunday, after which children join their families in church at The Peace for communion.  Beginning in September, Sunday School is held at the Parish House from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. when we walk to the church to join our families for communion.  Click here for the Sunday School Schedule through December.  If you have a child interested in participating in Sunday School or would like to know more about these programs, please email Leslie Coe, Childrens' Ministry, or call 757-229-2891.

Sunday School Classes: Kindergarten - Fifth Grade

Sunday School classes are held at the Parish House after the 9:15 a.m. service for three and four year olds, Kindergarten through 5th graders, and Middle School and High School students.  The younger children are taught traditional Bible stories through a Rotation model using storytelling, arts, drama and games.  Each class (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) has two teachers that are with the group all year to create a meaningful community of learners.  Everyone, including parents, hear the story together, then the classes rotate through art, drama, and games to enrich the story. .

Sunday School Classes: Middle - High School

The older children (middle and high school) are involved in Acting with Christ: Your Journey with GodWe use several published curriculums, the Episcopal Curriculum for Youth, Journey-to-Adulthood and others as resources (other resources are used such as novels, movies, newspapers, magazines, non-fiction works, and guest speakers/parishioners).  We look at how Christ is calling us to act in the world, and how we respond to that call.  We learn about and discuss topics such as spirituality, relationships, diversity, peace and justice.  Pathfinders with Christ are grades 6th, 7th & 8th, and Travelers with Christ are 9-10th and 11-12th grades.
