Faith Formation: Christianity & The Arts

Tuesdays this Fall - October 3, 10, 17, 24 · 7pm - Parish House

From the Bible to modern works of art and literature, Christianity has long been expressed through artistic means. The Christian Formation Committee of Bruton Parish is pleased to present a four-part series exploring aspects of this broad topic. Join us in Lewis Hall at Bruton Parish for a series of presentations on poetry, art, and music. Doors open at 6:45pm; light refreshments will be served, with programs beginning at 7:00pm.

The Varied History of Episcopal Hymnody

Rebecca Davy, Music Director & Organist - October 17

Our own Rebecca Davy serves as Bruton’s Music Director and Organist. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance at the University of Puget Sound, and holds two Masters degrees from the University of Southern California in Organ Performance and Music History. Besides her leadership of Bruton’s expansive music programs and concerts, Beckie is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Williamsburg Women's Chorus. In an offering that will include both lecture and musical examples, Beckie will explore familiar Episcopal hymns and the extensive sourcing of hymnody from a wide range of Christian traditions.

Why You should (re-)Read Paradise Lost

Adam Potkay - October 24

Adam Potkay joined the faculty of the William & Mary English department in 1990 as an Assistant Professor, and has held the title of William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Humanities since 2009. He has earned degrees from Cornell University and the Johns Hopkins University, and was awarded a PhD in English from Rutgers University. His latest book is Hope: A Literary History, an accessible exploration of hope from the views of philosophy, theology, and literature. Professor Potkay will explore the importance of John Milton's renowned work Paradise Lost, and why we all ought to give this work renewed focus.

The Making of the New Testament

Rev. Steven Woolley (October 19/26 & November 2/9/16)

What’s in the New Testament, and where did it come from? Who wrote it, and how is it inspired by God’s Holy Spirit? How were certain books chosen or not? How do Episcopalians understand the text? Join us for five weeks of conversation led by the Rev. Steven Woolley, beginning Thursday, October 19, from 7-8pm in Coffee, Tea & Thee (Parish House). All are welcome. Bring a friend!

  • Education For Ministry

Education for Ministry (EFM), a four-year program, is offered both afternoon and evening once a week during the year. EFM is an adult spiritual formation program aimed at enabling students to live into their Baptismal covenant and discern lay ministry opportunities. It progresses through the Old Testament, New Testament, Church History and Theologies. Registration is in September and follows the academic year.  If you have any questions, please email EFM@brutonparish.org.

  • Cursillo

The word Cursillo means short course, such as one would run in a race. The full name, Cursillos in Cristiandad, has been translated as “short courses in Christian living.” This movement within the Church is intended to help Christians learn and live what is fundamental to being a Christian, and help these same Christians discover and live out a Christian vocation.  Cursillo helps Christians measure the depth of their faith, to get on with their mission in the world, to connect them with others with the same goals in networks, and to hold up examples of ordinary Christians who are acting as apostles in their ordinary life.

You must have a Cursillista sponsor who will be able to answer your questions and tell you more about life in the Fourth Day, which is unique to Cursillo. In addition, you must have the endorsement of the Rector. If you are interested in Cursillo, you may contact the Parish Office to receive a brochure with more details about Cursillo, along with an application. The next step is to speak with the Rector, who will put you in touch with parishioners who are Cursillistas.

  • Other Educational Opportunities

Two Education for Ministry (EfM) groups meet once a week (one in the morning, the other in the evening) as a regular part of adult opportunities. We also offer seasonal classes; Bible Studies; children's admission to Communion; family programs; and worship planned usually during Advent, Lent, and other times as announced. The Disciples of Christ in Community Program is an adult education program that provides experience in building Christian community while encouraging individual spiritual growth.
