Christian Formation Offerings

Below are details about the various Adult Christian Formation offerings available at the church

and/or Parish House. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the Parish House

at 757-229-2891 or email  BPC@brutonparish.org.

Lectionary Study Tuesdays at 9am

It seems many would like to know more about how the Episcopal Church understands

Holy Scripture, and what scripture has to do with our ordinary daily lives. Bruton’s Tuesday

morning lectionary seminar, led by the Rev. Steven Woolley, offers an opportunity

for a deep dive into scripture, congenial conversation, and a little levity. Please join us in the

parish house library each Tuesday morning from 9-10am

where we promise to start and end on time.

This offering is on hiatus until October.

Fall Formation - Meaning in Architecture (October 21 @ 7pm)

A church is much more than a building to house worship services.

Every church is designed to say something about what its people believe and

how they express it in worship. The restoration of Bruton Parish Church to its pre-revolutionary

elegance displays a rich story about Anglican thinking in British North America but it’s not been

stuck in the past. Today's Bruton displays the theological importance of our liturgical heritage extending

back to the very beginning of Christianity. Come and experience that story with the Rev. Steven Woolley

on October 21 at 7pm. We encourage all to attend — from children through the most mature of us.

Come prepared to be informed, entertained, and guided into a deeper understanding of our Episcopalian

ways and our Anglican tradition.

  • Education For Ministry

Education for Ministry (EFM), a four-year program, is offered both afternoon and evening once a week during the year. EFM is an adult spiritual formation program aimed at enabling students to live into their Baptismal covenant and discern lay ministry opportunities. It progresses through the Old Testament, New Testament, Church History and Theologies. Registration is in September and follows the academic year.  If you have any questions, please email EFM@brutonparish.org.

  • Cursillo

The word Cursillo means short course, such as one would run in a race. The full name, Cursillos in Cristiandad, has been translated as “short courses in Christian living.” This movement within the Church is intended to help Christians learn and live what is fundamental to being a Christian, and help these same Christians discover and live out a Christian vocation.  Cursillo helps Christians measure the depth of their faith, to get on with their mission in the world, to connect them with others with the same goals in networks, and to hold up examples of ordinary Christians who are acting as apostles in their ordinary life.

You must have a Cursillista sponsor who will be able to answer your questions and tell you more about life in the Fourth Day, which is unique to Cursillo. In addition, you must have the endorsement of the Rector. If you are interested in Cursillo, you may contact the Parish Office to receive a brochure with more details about Cursillo, along with an application. The next step is to speak with the Rector, who will put you in touch with parishioners who are Cursillistas.

  • Other Educational Opportunities

Two Education for Ministry (EfM) groups meet once a week (one in the morning, the other in the evening) as a regular part of adult opportunities. We also offer seasonal classes; Bible Studies; children's admission to Communion; family programs; and worship planned usually during Advent, Lent, and other times as announced. The Disciples of Christ in Community Program is an adult education program that provides experience in building Christian community while encouraging individual spiritual growth.
